Rackspace’s Mosso cloud hosting has introduced a new product named
CloudFS, their own scalable storage solution to take on
Amazon’s S3 service.
The motto is very straight forward that you pay only for what you use, and the pricing is slightly below Amazon’s that went into effect on May 1st, but considering how entrenched the S3 service is, it may be difficult for anyone to dethrone them. The service is available by API for languages such as .NET, Python, Ruby on Rails and more. Rackspace customers will also get a benefit of no bandwidth transfer fees according to Allen Stern at
Center Networks, which could be a distinct advantage to existing customers.
Starting today, you can apply for the invite-only beta by going
here. With $.15 per gigabyte pricing, it is sure worth a look to see if it will meet your needs.
In case you’re still unfamiliar with cloud computing, something that is quickly becoming the meme du jour in the blogosphere these days, you should take a listen to a quick podcast Mark did with RightScale CEO Michael Crandell, in which they attempt to concisely explain exactly what the concept and application of cloud computing is.
